Our dentist may provide your child with a local anesthetic before beginning many treatments. Local anesthetic helps to dull pain in part or all of your child’s mouth and may be used in combination with sedation dentistry to provide a more comfortable overall experience. Before your child receives an anesthetic, speak with our dentist and team about any allergies your child has or medications they are taking, including herbal supplements, vitamins and over-the-counter drugs, so that we can ensure that your child will be safe.
Local anesthetics are typically used to numb specific areas. They are usually injected through a needle into your child’s gum or inner cheek. When your child receives a local anesthetic, our dentist will dry part of their mouth and gently swab the area with a numbing gel prior to injecting the medication. While many patients do not feel the injection needle, some report a slight “sting” caused by the anesthetic moving into the oral tissues.
The effects of local anesthesia typically last for several hours. Your child may have difficulty chewing or speaking clearly until the numbness wears off. Please advise your child to be careful when chewing, as they may bite down on the numb area and injure themselves without being aware of it. Children may chew on or play with the numbed areas of their mouths if unsupervised and can cause significant harm to themselves without feeling pain. You should watch your child closely after they have received a local anesthetic.
