Digital X-Rays Q&A

What are digital X-rays?

Digital X-rays use electronic sensors and low levels of radiation to capture high-quality images of your child’s teeth, gums, and tooth roots. The team uses this information to evaluate your child’s oral health and identify potential problems that aren’t yet causing symptoms.

The team conducts digital X-rays in-office and takes great care to ensure your child’s comfort and safety. By undergoing digital X-rays on a routine basis, it’s possible to preserve your child’s smile for years to come.

What types of problems can digital X-rays detect?

At Kids Klub Pediatric Dentistry, the team uses digital X-rays to detect various oral health problems, including:

  • Decay between the teeth
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Improper tooth root positioning
  • Cysts and abscesses
  • Fractures in existing fillings
  • Tumors
  • Infection in the nerve roots
  • Bone loss

The team also uses digital X-rays to plan certain types of dental treatment like oral surgery, root canal treatment, and orthodontics.

What does getting digital X-rays involve?

Before taking digital X-rays, the team has your child sit down. Then, they place a lead apron over your child’s chest and lap, minimizing their exposure to radiation.

Your child’s provider positions the X-ray machine along the side of their mouth and asks them to sit still. They take X-rays on one side of the mouth, reposition the machine, and take more on the other side. The entire process takes 5-10 minutes and is entirely pain-free.

How long does it take to get the results of digital X-rays?

Digital X-rays provide instant results. There’s no waiting period or the need to process film because they automatically upload to a computer.

Your child’s provider assesses their X-rays, looking for any abnormalities or areas of concern. If they detect anything unusual, they go over the results with you and explain the next steps regarding treatment.

How often does my child need digital X-rays?

At Kids Klub Pediatric Dentistry, the team recommends digital X-rays every one or two years. If your child has a history of oral health problems, like cavities, impacted teeth, or gum disease, more frequent X-rays may be necessary. Following an in-office exam, the team can make recommendations that align with your child’s age and needs.
